The king and his lords pledge to give up the company of women for three years. But what happens when a delegation of witty women visit from abroad? Promises are made and broken, identities are mistaken, and witty wordplay ensues! Writing in the wake of the English defeat of the Spanish Armada and the rise in popularity of love sonnet, Shakespeare brings together teasing political satire and clever cultural commentary in this "problem play" (so called because it is a rare comedy that does not end with marriage celebrations).
